Yes, this is sadly quite true. It could be hard to find a good place when you get there in the summer without a reservation. They have an information center where they know when places become available. You could also try going to one motel from another in the hope of finding a free room, but be aware that the motels near highway 97 are placed in a noisy and somewhat messy location.
